Case Snapshot
Client Background
The customer was a European lighting solution provider working on a backlight module requirement for a car manufacturer. They needed a custom LED board that could fit the module structure, provide stable low-current LED output, and connect reliably to the vehicle power source. A standard LED strip or general LED PCB was not suitable because the board required a specific LED layout, controlled current behavior, and a very small disconnectable connector for assembly. The project needed engineering support before production, not only component sourcing.
Visual Documentation
Customization Scope
LED Layout: 21 LEDs arranged according to the customer’s car backlight module structure.
Current Control: High-precision IC selected for stable low-current LED output.
Connector Design: Tiny disconnectable crimp-style connector matched to vehicle power connection.
PCB Development: Custom board layout developed for compact backlight module integration.
Production Reference: Approved sample used to control later PCB, LED, IC, and connector supply.
Engineering Approach
VST Lighting developed a custom LED PCB board with 21 LEDs arranged according to the customer’s backlight module requirement. The board design focused on controlled light distribution, compact layout, and electrical stability at low current. Because the total current was only around 4.5mA, VST selected a high-precision IC to support more accurate current control for the LEDs. This helped reduce visible unevenness risk in the backlight area. The board also included a tiny disconnectable crimp-style connector, allowing the customer to connect the LED board to the vehicle-side power source during module assembly. The project involved deep custom development, including PCB layout review, LED position planning, IC selection, connector matching, tooling preparation, and sample confirmation. After the customer approved the development result, VST supported mass production based on the confirmed board specification and connector reference.
How We Delivered
VST reviewed the backlight module structure, LED count, current target, connector need, and assembly method.
The LED layout, PCB routing, IC selection, and connector position were developed for the module requirement.
Tooling and production preparation were completed in about 3 weeks based on confirmed design direction.
Samples were checked for LED placement, current control, connector fit, and backlight appearance.
Production started after sample approval and followed the confirmed PCB, IC, LED, and connector references.
Results & Outcomes
The custom LED board helped the customer meet the car backlight module requirement with a controlled LED layout, precise low-current design, and assembly-ready connector. The solution reduced the risk of uneven backlight output and simplified connection to the vehicle power source. After the board was confirmed, the customer used the module to support its supply chain opportunity with the car manufacturer. The case also created a practical reference for later automotive lighting projects. For repeat orders, the confirmed PCB layout, IC selection, connector model, and sample reference helped keep production details clear and easier to manage.
LED Layout: 21 LEDs placed according to the customer’s backlight module requirement.
Current Design: Total board current controlled at around 4.5mA.
Connector Fit: Tiny disconnectable crimp-style connector matched the power connection need.
Tooling Time: Tooling completed in about 3 weeks before mass production.
Business Result: Supported customer entry into an automotive lighting supply chain opportunity.
Risk Assessment
200 pcs
About 3 weeks for tooling and first development preparation; about 10 days for mass production after sample confirmation.
Sampling helped confirm the 21 LED layout, low-current behavior, IC control performance, connector position, and assembly fit before mass production. For this car backlight module, sample checking was important because minor current variation or connector mismatch could affect visual uniformity and the customer’s module assembly process.
For repeat supply, VST used the approved sample, PCB layout, IC reference, LED specification, connector model, and packaging record as production references. Any change to LED batch, IC, connector, or board layout needed communication before production to reduce variation between approved samples and later orders.
Full Case Notes
A European lighting solution provider customized an LED board for car backlight use so it could support a vehicle manufacturer’s module requirement.
The project required a compact LED PCB with a customized layout of 21 LEDs. The electrical design needed precise current control because the total board current was very low, around 4.5mA. At this current level, small variation between LEDs could affect backlight uniformity and final visual appearance.
VST Lighting reviewed the LED layout, PCB structure, power connection method, and current control requirement before developing the board. A high-precision IC was selected to help control the LED output more consistently across the 21 LED positions. The board also used a tiny disconnectable crimp-style connector so the customer could connect the module to the vehicle power source during assembly.
This was an OEM module development case rather than a simple standard LED board order. The key work included PCB layout matching, IC selection, connector integration, sample confirmation, and production preparation. Tooling took about 3 weeks, and mass production lead time was about 10 days after confirmation. The customer used the developed board to support entry into the car manufacturer’s supply chain and later received more automotive lighting-related project opportunities.
